General

Due to their special nature of swimming and separated moving their eyes they are the favorites in many tanks. But so cute they may be, Dwarf Puffers are not so-called "beginner fishes." First, there are food specialists was some effort brings with it, because dry food is consistently ignored. However, this fact often misunderstood and are dwarf Puffers are sold or bought as snail killers. Unfortunately it is hidden or repressed what should happen to the Puffer after the snail plague is apparently halted.

Here is an appeal in the interest of all Dwarf Puffers. If you only want to reduce ypur snails you should research the causes and not just the symptoms of combat. The Snails populations caused by plenty food, and disappear again when food is reduced.

On the other hand, some fellows can be aggressive towards other fish, or worse some of them bite too slowly fishs into the fin. "Fin Biters" are among the Dwarf Puffers a question of character, not every Dwarf Puffer shows such behavior but you should keep it in mind. Nevertheless, you should ensure that other fishes are able to defend themselves or to swim away quickly. My experience: Small shrimp, Apple Snails, Siamese Fighting Fish or Corys are often victims of attacks. Admittedly, Dwarf Puffers have some special needs, but if you take that into account you are able to successfully maintain and even breed these kind of. If you are willing to spend more effort, such as breeding snails or permanently provide live food, I just can recommend you these freshwater Puffer because of their body size and robustness .

Keel Puffer

If it is spoken about Keel shaped Puffers it is generally meant the Carinotetraodon lorteti from Thailand . The picture shows that Carinotetraodon travancoricus is able to bluid such Keel too. For this reason, the class of Tetradodon Carinotetraodon also been renamed. The Latin name is derived from the Latin word latin Word Carina => Keel und von den greek Words Tetra => Four and Odous => Tooth.

This Keel is used as threatening against competitors but also to impressing among females. Right hand side you can see the Keel in a frontal view

Food

Now we come maybe to the most important issue. How do I feed my Dwarf Puffer? While all Puffers, from their specific nature must ware off the continuously growing teeth to prevent blocking her mouth, these effect seems to be not that worse as it is noticed for the south america Puffer Colomesus asellus. Oordinary dry food, equal which consistency will be not accepted. First choice are and will remain small snails. Small snails are cracked, larger snails just bite into and bitten out some pieces. The snail perishes due to injury and slips from their housing snails out and then completely eaten. What if we are not longer able to provide snails? Then live food is the best alternative. In Germany good pet shops offers Tubifex, red and white bloodworms. You also can try Hyallela azteca,Moina macropoda and baby shrimps, As an emergency Food frozen bloodworms works almost always, everywhere available and it can be stored and handled well. I would like to mention the fact, that after 1-2 weeks training some but not all Dwarf Puffers eat freeze-dried insects. This is different from animal to animal. Generally, I noticed that often females can be recognize because they constantly lookout for Food. Males, however, are shy and sometimes come only from its coverage area when they get Food. Everybody who don't want to spend these expenses should not buy this Fish.
